The Harper Regime makes Texan Republicans look like Cuban Marxists… Posted by Marek Vermin on October 18th, 2011

Harper’s draconian “justice” reforms are revealed in all their extremist glory by the critiques of TEXAN REPUBLICANS who say that the expensive new penal system is a step in the wrong direction. When Texan Republicans look pragmatic next to the Government of Canada, you know we’re right fucked. ‘Bout time Harper was kicked to the curb with the rest of the trash. Don’t try to recycle him unless his rotten innards have been removed from the shiny plastic packaging.

“Stability” and the Post-Mubarak Regime Posted by Marek Vermin on February 10th, 2011

One should always be cautious of lofty-sounding jargon, but especially when considering political affairs in the Middle East. Concepts like the “Peace Process” and “liberation” tend to be loaded rhetorical tools masking a grotesque reality of war and criminal behaviour behind a fantasy discourse.

The Martyr Index on Punk Radio Cast Posted by Marek Vermin on August 15th, 2008

Hey all! Check out the interview with us and a whole slough of other artists that performed at Calgary’s Sled Island Festival on Punk Radio Cast. The whole episode is available as a downloadable mp3 here. We were fucking haggard (what with destroying my vocal chords on tour and Jenny’s case of food poisoning!) and I think you can tell, but the whole interview was a ton of fun and both Chris MacBurnie and Stacey Steel were awesome hosts. Cheers!

Interview with “A Call For Arms Zine” (Tarlac, Philippines) Posted by Marek Vermin on March 31st, 2008

Band Biography please?

Marek Vermin (MV): We’ve been around since 2001, but we’ve been through a number of line-ups. The only members of the band that have been with us since the beginning are myself and Casey. The band was founded as a collective, but lots of bands say that and no one ever seems to know what exactly that means. We were the same. It was basically a position about our ideological stance. A loose consensus was the formula for band decisions, but there was no formal structure with a constitution or anything.

A Word and a Beat and a Free Album Posted by Marek Vermin on March 28th, 2008

FREE MUSIC to Help Free the Music!

We’ve just posted a new song, “A Word and a Beat”, on our page on myspace, our page on facebook, and on iLike. This song, from our forthcoming album, Molotov Rocktail, is a celebration of underground independent music. Independent music has always survived the various economic and technological transformations that have upset music capitalism and today is no different. Today, the executives steering the bloated entertainment industries are terrified of the possibility of people hearing music without paying for it. The industry is attempting to force through legislation to engineer profitability into art and stop its mass proliferation. However, this is nothing but a false barrier between artists and listeners. Music is written to be heard. Everything else is peripheral, but the music industry has been treating it in the exact opposite manner for too long. So, let’s take our music back!

In honour of the vitality of art and the people who aren’t afraid to share their culture freely with others, we are going to be releasing our new album, Molotov Rocktail, for free on the internet in conjunction with Meter Records. Keep visiting our website in April to download the album. And make sure you share it with others.

Oso Blanco Posted by Marek Vermin on March 18th, 2008

We’ve posted a new song on our pages: The Martyr Index on facebook and The Martyr Index on myspace. It is a song about Byron Shane Chubbuck, also known as Oso Blanco, who is a wolf clan Cherokee/Choctaw raised in New Mexico. Throughout 1998 and 1999 he robbed a number of banks and used the proceeds to send assistance to the Zapatista Rebels in Chiapas, Mexico. After the FBI learned that he was giving the money away to aid the poor and the dispossessed they dubbed him “Robin the Hood”. Following his arrest Oso Blanco was sentenced to 80 years in a federal prison and he is currently serving that sentence in the US.
