The Martyr Index

Lyrics

Occupied

These chalk outlines serve to remind you
Of the vanished homes of the ghosts
Who kept this land vital before you
These chalk outlines serve to remind you
Of the bullets of butchers and bulldozers
That cleared this land off for you

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum, My friend
Shalom to you, Peace in the end

These chalk outlines serve to remind you
Of the starvation and desperation
Caused by policies written for you
These chalk outlines serve to remind you
Of the ghettos of blood and streets paved with mud
Sealed-in just behind you

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum, my friend
Let us hope peace isn’t dead

These chalk outlines serve to remind you
Of the mutilation and murder of children
Who won’t be bullied by you
These chalk outlines serve to remind you
That the people resist with a unified fist
And won’t be displaced for you

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum, my friend
Peace is nothing if justice is dead
As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum, my friend
Palestinian blood runs red

Just like every other. They are sister, they are brother
No life less than any other. They are father, they are mother.
No race, no class, no border. Human rights should be the only world order.
No race, no class, no border. Equal rights should be the only world order.
No race, no class, no border. Justice for all - the only - only world order.

This song is loosely based around a symbolic action that I once heard about in which Israeli students drew outlines of the now vanished homes of Palestinians over top of the homes of Israelis.

The conflict in the region is larger than just Israelis versus Palestinians or Jews versus Arabs. It is about authority and domination of all forms. We can no longer afford to blindly follow our leaders. If there is to be peace, it must be made amongst the various populations of the world acting in our common interests as people and members of communities and we all must reject the false and shallow notions of national interests. A nation provides no person any guarantee of freedom - that can only be achieved through solidarity and mutual aid.
