The Martyr Index

Lyrics

Walls of Blood, Walls of Steel

Cowards! They hide behind the barricades!
Outside! A war is waged on the streets!
People! Demand freedom from servitude!
Justice! A taste of all they produce . . .

The World is run behind a wall of steel.
Your hands, my hands, still turn the wheels.
Wheels that become profit from our sweat!
Never ceasing as they devour our world!

We’re the salt of the Earth
We know what life is worth
Their world is dying fast
Our future will defeat the past

Blood-stained windows scream out so silently.
Where the police lashed out so mercilessly.
Armies of the élites patrol the streets!
Violence inherent in a profit motive.

We’re the salt of the Earth
We know what life is worth
Their world is dying fast
Our future will defeat the past

Bullets rip through tissue and open up
A hole in our Fleeting Façade.
No more pretend – this time people die!
Their talk of so-called Democracy is a lie!

We’re the salt of the Earth
We know what life is worth
Their world is dying fast
Our future will defeat the past

This song is about the bloodbath in Genoa, but it speaks to the entire movement against global capitalism. From the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas in 1995, to the G8 Protests in Kananaskis and beyond, there is a revitalised people’s movement demanding a world free from oppression and indignity. This movement is growing – the future is ours!
