You don’t need to be an anarchist to enjoy the bookfair!
The Anarchist Bookfair is an annual event that brings book retailers and publishers from across western Canada to Calgary to set up sales and information tables. It’s kind of like a craft fair, except for books. The focus is primarily on radical and progressive literature, but we always include some other non-book vendors (this year we have a local artisan who makes these awesome hula hoops and a vendor of sweatshop-free clothing). There will also be information tables to keep the variety up. Additionally, the event features a number of workshops and speakers on a wide variety of topics (this year we have a speaker on Six Nations land dispute in Ontario and a workshop on elementary electrical skills among others) and we always show a film on the first night. On the second night of the fair, we throw a small party called the “People’s Prom”. It’s basically an excuse to dress up in formal wear (the definition of which is *very* loose… and sometimes quite outrageous) and dance. The prom is a licensed event and the proceeds go to reimburse out-of-town vendors and presenters for their travel costs.
The bookfair is organized in a decentralized and non-hierarchical way and we strive to make the event as accessible as possible to all people. To that end, the venue is wheelchair accessible and we offer a transit ticket subsidy to attendees who request it.
If this year’s bookfair is anything like the last, it promises to be educational, informative… and a total blast!
